Traditional Rod & Kulture Illustrated! Hot Rods-Customs-Pin-ups-Bikes-Art-MusicIssue # 45Diablo's WagonLife is full of choices. Each day we have to thread our way through the thorny bush of life and pick the right path. Some decisions are easier than others, and some? Not so much. When it comes to building a car, those decisions stack up until it becomes a rolling summary of the paths taken. For Tommy Herrera, or "Diablo" of Diablo's House of Style, this wagon is his reward for choosing wisely. You know everyone in Bakersfield has a nickname.
These days it’s hard to build a standout car that’s “out of the box” without going too far. However, with the help of metal maestro Jesse Miller, Jeff James’ 1931 Ford coupe was done right. Aggressive elegance would be a good way to describe it. If the competition coupe style was around in the pre-war, art-deco era when automobile racing was still a gentleman’s sport, this is what you would get.
The coupe started in 2012 as a quick “in between” project while Jesse labored on Jeff’s ’54 Chevy (that we ran a while back) at his shop, Sacramento Kustoms. The coupe was vaguely listed on Craigslist as a ’31 Ford by a guy selling off 15 of his cars who said he’d have to dig it out and look for the title. The car had been stored in a metal Sea Train trailer since 1986.

“Randy Winkle’s ‘41 Willys Gasser is a Triple Play.”
If there’s one guy who has earned the right to an old car with A/C, it’s Randy Winkle. Randy and the Famoso Speed Shop have turned out countless bare-bones cars that were built to run like raped apes. He frequently spends his time strapped into his front-engine dragster and altereds and blasting down the drag strip. Many of his cars have been featured here, but they all might’ve never existed if it wasn’t for this green Willys, or rather, the one that it pays tribute to.
