All the way from Italy, we have the Watson-inspired ’57 Firedome owned by Alessio Canone. This clean and mild DeSoto also is the essence of a traditional custom, but this time as a late ‘50s kustom. Issue #53 of Kustoms Illustrated Magazine !
First up we have two incredible cover cars this issue! Roger O’Dell cloned not one, but two versions of Larry Watson’s ’50 Chevy. “The Heartless” and “Grapevine” are brought to you in full blazing color just like Larry would have wanted it! Next we bring you a wild flamed ’56 Plymouth all the way from Norway. “The Creature” is painted with crazy seaweed-style flames and sports canted quad headlights and a cabinet knob grille for that radical late ‘50s look. Our next featured car is none other than Gil Ayala’s personal kustom ’55 T-Bird called The Wild Bird. We bring you through the history and recent restoration of this historic mid ‘50s custom.
Once again, Albert Drake returns for Part 2 of his great article on a mid-‘50s custom car club known as Kustoms of Portland. This article is packed full of first-hand knowledge and chronicles some of the many cars and owners that were involved with this well-known club. This issue we have Rocky Burris’ ’50 Chevy custom, “Blue Hawaii” on the cover and the center spread. Rocky’s Chevy was built in the Northwest, but he gave it a few Wichita touches! This is one beautiful mild custom! Up next is another Northwestern custom, but this one has a little history behind it. The Mandarin Princess is a gorgeous ’56 Chevy convertible with a radical front-end restyle that was done in the early ‘60s in Portland, Oregon. Wait ‘till you see this survivor!

Issue #55 of Kustoms Illustrated Magazine
We have a super issue for you this time around with the focus being on the 1970s & 80s era Kustom Resurgence! Our cover car and centerfold is a direct result of that resurgence and has been meticulously restored to perfection. The Curly Tremayne Merc is one of the most iconic custom cars to emerge from the mid ‘70s rebirth and we bring it to you in all its Tangerine glory!
To continue our theme, we bring you a ten page light-hearted article titled “Where were you in ’82?” that touches on the second coming of age of kustoms when clubs like Kustom Kemps of America and West Coast Kustoms helped usher in a new era. It has a “little books” pedigree and was co-built by Ron Courtney who also built the famous X-51 shoebox Ford coupe. We have extensive coverage on this car along with vintage never before seen photos of both Tangerine and the X-51!
Next we have the latest custom build by Barry Mazza (the current owner/restorer/caretaker of the famous Barris-built “Aztec” ’55 Chevy). His gorgeous period ’46 Ford coupe was also done in the early-Barris style and just oozes pure traditional custom class. See it in its full color glory!

Albert Drake takes us on a Wartime Road Trip from Portland, Oregon, to Los Angeles, California in 1943 where three close friends hit the road in a drop top ’36 Ford and visit the Mecca of hot rod and custom cars. Along the way they visit speed shops, used car lots, drive-ins and more, purchasing speed and custom accessories from fledgling shops and pioneers, all during the birth of custom and hot rodding culture. Also featured is another shoebox Ford owned by a “young gun” by the name of Ryan Kopchinski. His radically chopped ’49 sedan is perfect and traditional in every way. We know you will like it.
